Household Hazardous Waste Depot

The Depot is now Open till Saturday August 29, 2026. 

During the operating season the depot operates during the same days, hours and holiday schedule as the Renfrew Landfill. Regular hours* are:

  • Monday: Closed
  • Tuesday: 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday: 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Thursday: 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Friday: 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • Sunday: Closed

*The Depot will be closed on holidays and as required for site construction or staff training. No closures are currently planned, un-planned closures will be posted to the news section of our website. 

Some items can also be returned to retail sites that are available year-round, please visit RPRA's Where to Recycle map or Product Care Find a Recycling Location to find a location near you, however it is recommended to call ahead to ensure the drop off location is open and does not have use restrictions. Small standard household and small tool batteries are accepted at Renfrew Town Hall, myFM Centre, and Renfrew Public Library year-round.

This depot can be used free of charge by residents of the following municipalities: Town of Renfrew, Addington Highlands Township, Town of Arnprior, Admaston/Bromley Township, Horton Township, Greater Madawaska Township, McNab Braeside Township, and Township of Whitewater Region, however other services provided at the Landfill are restricted to Town of Renfrew residents only.

What is household hazardous waste?

Household Hazardous Waste is corrosive, flammable, explosive or poisonous and must not be put in the garbage, recycling, or poured down the drain, toilet or sewer. Items such as paint, chemicals, propane tanks, batteries, household cleaners and others are considered Household Hazardous Waste. Household Hazardous Waste requires special handling because it can harm workers and cause fires and explosions in collection trucks and at waste management facilities. Improper disposal also has negative effects on the environment and can be harmful to humans and animals.

What items are accepted at the Household Hazardous Waste Depot

  • Paints: All Types of Paint, Stains, Varnish, Spray Paint, etc.
  • Solvents: Turpentine, Acetone, Mineral Spirits, Degreasers, Paint Thinner, Paint Stripper, etc.
  • Flammables: Lamp and Heating Fuel, Kerosene, Methanol, Liquid Tar, Hand Sanitizer, Lighters, Adhesives, Glue, etc.
  • Household Cleaners, Disinfectants, Detergent, Bleach, Oven And Drain Cleaners, Ammonia, etc.
  • Herbicides, Pesticides, Insecticides, Weed Killer, etc.
  • Pool cleaners & shock
  • Propane Tanks
  • Batteries: Small Standard, Button, Small Tool, Mobility, Car and Boat Batteries.
  • Automotive Fluids: Used Oil, Brake Fluid, Gasoline, Anti-Freeze, etc.
  • Oil filters
  • Oil containers (empty or containing oil)
  • Light Bulbs, Tubes and non-PCB ballasts (light fixture must be removed; string lights not accepted)
  • Fire Extinguishers
  • Aerosols
  • Pressurized containers: e.g. Acetylene, Refrigerant, Propane, Helium, & CO2 cylinders.
  • Spray Foam tanks
  • Driveway and Roof Sealers
  • Pharmaceuticals/Medication (No needles)
  • Mercury Bulb Thermostats and Switches

All accepted products must be in their original containers. Any single item may not exceed a weight of 23 kg (50 lbs), any liquid product must be in containers no greater than 5 gallons (19 liters). Annually, the depot will accept a maximum of 60 Kg (130 Lbs) or 300 L of waste for a single property. 

What items are not accepted at the Household Hazardous Waste Depot

Materials containing Asbestos, PCBs, radioactive waste, pathological waste or explosives (including ammunition, flares & fireworks) are not accepted at the Depot. 

Oily rags, paint brushes and trays, smoke detectors (batteries removed) are not considered hazardous waste and can be disposed of in regular garbage. Most empty containers are not considered hazardous waste and can be recycled in your bluebox, however empty paint cans, and empty automotive fluid containers should be brought to the Depot.

The depot will accept household hazardous waste from business, provided that the waste is similar in type and volume to that of the average household. The Depot is not to be used as a commercial and/or industrial waste disposal solution.
