Posted On: Wednesday, October 4, 2023
Renfrew Fire Chief and Director of Emergency Services Michael Guest says, “It’s important that everyone keeps cooking safety a top priority, not just during Fire Prevention Week, but all year round.”(Renfrew, Ontario) – The Renfrew Fire Department is highlighting the importance of cooking safety during Fire Prevention Week. The annual Fire Prevention Week safety campaign runs from October 8th to 14th, 2023, and this year the theme is, “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to Fire Prevention.”
The National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) says cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries with unattended cooking the leading cause of cooking fires and deaths.
The Renfrew Fire Department and NFPA are sharing some cooking safety tips.
- Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol/drugs, don’t use the stove or stovetop.
- Stay in the kitchen wile you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for a short period of time, turn off the stove.
- If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
- Keep anything that can catch fire – oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels, or curtains – away from your stovetop.
Chief Guest adds, “Everyone should have a fire escape plan at home in case of an emergency and remember to check batteries and expiry dates on smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they’re working properly.”
